New Women Connectors: Storytellers are retaking the stage, 2 mei 19-22:30u Amsterdam

New Women Connectors (NL), Pro Lapinlahti (FIN) and our group of storytellers invite you to an evening full of stories capturing histories, smells, colours and memories from Yemen, Nigeria, Palestine, Singapore, Libanon, Nicaragua, Iraq, Morocco, Syria and Pakistan.

A significant challenge we face in migrant and refugee self-representation is that narratives about us are mainly shaped, framed and shared by media, voices and individuals who do not represent us or our experiences. To take ownership over our own stories, we - a group of 10 storytellers from across Europe with lived migration and asylum experience - will take the stage to reclaim the leadership, ownership and authorship of our narratives. Given the far-right rhetoric on migration in recent national elections across the EU, it is more crucial than ever to challenge this narrative ahead of the EU elections in June.

VU Conference: Making Rights a Reality for UMW, 17-19 juni 2024

The "Making Rights a Reality for undocumented migrant workers" conference is aimed at bringing together international law instruments protecting the rights of undocumented people, with human rights activism and practice. The conference strives to break new ground in the possibilities for international norms and their effective protection.

We encourage contributions by migrant activists and social organizations which should include in particular the voices of undocumented migrants, and topics such as migrant worker rights-claiming, trade unions and the human rights of migrant workers and much more.

Please submit your proposal by 19 February 2024 at makingrightsreality.rch@vu.nl.

Human Rights in Migration Societies, 18–20 September 2024, University Giessen

References to human rights have become increasingly prominent in migration-related discourse and practices. Actors in migration societies frequently use the language of human rights to articulate their interests and goals. Concurrently, other actors challenge such rights-based claims to migrants’ inclusion. In the legal system, for example, doctrinal arguments based in human rights law and strategic litigation at the European Court of Human Rights play important roles in shaping European immigration and refugee law. In various contexts of political action, migrant and non-migrant activists, diaspora members and policymakers refer to human rights when making political claims, pursuing transitional justice, or legitimizing inclusionary and exclusionary migration and border policies. The advance of human rights discourse is also occurring in professional and other everyday contexts, where the attitudes of actors within migration societies are actually expressed and formed, such as in school contexts, in social work, and in social and traditional media. At the same time, however, European migration laws and policies are becoming increasingly restrictive, leading to human rights violations on a daily basis, discourses of exclusion, and a widespread perception of a “human rights backlash”. How do these observations match?
